South Boston, Va. - Jeb Burton, 17, son of former NASCAR driver Daytona 500 winner Ward Burton, has been chosen as driver user to open the season of Volkswagen of America, Inc., SCCA Pro Racing Jetta TDI Cup, organized by the Virginia International Raceway. Burton involved also all weekend on and off the track, including practice and qualifying and competing in the series' second race in Virginia International Raceway at 2 pm April 26.
The 2009 season marks the second year of Cup competition for the Volkswagen Jetta TDI during the season, young and drivers aged 16-26 competing in 10 events in eight route around North America. Each driver competing in the series will win a license from the SCCA Pro Racing at the end of the season and the series champion will earn $ 100,000. While Burton will be a full participant in the VIR race, that driver is not eligible for points or prize money.
The Jetta TDI Cup Series cars are all identical Jetta TDI, fueled by SynDiesel B5 HYPERFUELS '® bio-fuel. The car uses just two environmentally clean diesel fuel tanks at the races during the season. Like his father, founder of the Wildlife Foundation Ward Burton, Burton is a nature lover eager that cares primarily for conservation.
"I was born and raised in the faith to return the natural resources for the next generation. I am honored to be chosen to be a guest conductor for the Cup Series Volkswagen TDI and delighted to participate in this series as being environmentally friendly, "he said.
Currently, Burton led the No. 27 State Water Heaters Chevy Impala in the Limited Sportsman Division at South Boston Speedway. He participated in two races so far this season and finished in the top three to two.
Burton Jetta TDI Cup will also be decked out in orange state water heaters and blue.
Other guests on the pilot Opening the season are Simon Dumont, professional athlete freestyle skier and Red Bull and Dan Carney, winning automotive journalist.

The Jetta TDI is powered by a 2.0-liter engine, 170 horsepower four-cylinder TDI clean diesel engine mated to a six-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission.
